You are here:  Inclement Weather

In general, inclement weather, such as snow, sleet, ice, or rain, will not warrant the cancellation of classes or the closing of Zane State College’s (ZSC) campuses. Under such conditions, each student and employee should make judgment pertaining to his/her safety in traveling to and from the College. Click here for directions on how to sign up for notifications, on My Z-Online for Blackboard Connect, which will allow you to receive e-mail, text, and phone messages from the College in the event of a situation or closure.

If ZSC closes before classes begin/offices open or the College has a delayed opening, factors including weather forecasts and the conditions of parking lots and roads aid in the decision-making process. If the College closes or delays opening, communications will begin around 5 a.m. For everyone’s safety, when there is a delayed opening, only "essential personnel" should come to campus until the College is open.

When the College closes early, all staff, with the exception of essential personnel, are expected to leave in accordance with the closing time.

In general classes that have less than an hour remaining after the opening are cancelled.  Classes that start before the opening but have an hour or more remaining will run for the remainder of their scheduled time.  All classes beginning at or after the opening time will run as normally scheduled.

For example, if the College is delayed until 10:00 a.m., a class that normally runs from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. would be cancelled, a class that runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. would instead run from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. and any classes beginning after 10:00 a.m. or later would run as normally scheduled.  Faculty should report to their first open class.

If ZSC does cancel or delay classes, the official closing of the College will be communicated via:

For Employees:

Employees are encouraged to use your judgment about safety and travel conditions and should notify your supervisor once a decision is made. If ZSC has not officially canceled classes, tardiness and absence due to bad weather will be charged against your annual leave accumulation. If the College is open but you are unable to make it to work due to weather conditions, it will count as a vacation or personal leave. If you have no annual leave, then the time absent will be charged as leave without pay, depending on your employee classification. Should it become necessary to close ZSC officially, for a brief period of time due to inclement weather, then the resulting absence will not be charged to the employee. However, if the employee was on approved vacation, sick leave, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave, or any type of approved leave, the absence will be charged to the employee.
