Common Warning Signs

  • Giving away important items
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
  • Expressing feelings of hopelessness
  • Social withdrawal
  • Talking or writing about death/dying
  • Talking about ending it
  • A decline in performance with work, school, and or activities
  • Expressing feelings of depression and or anxious mood
  • Feeling trapped
  • A change in personality

Risk Factors

Risk factors may increase the chance that a person may try to take their life. Examples include:

  • A diagnosis such as depression, anxiety, bipolar
  • Serious or Chronic health condition
  • Stressful life event
  • Ongoing stressors (relationship problems, finances, etc.)
  • Previous suicide attempts

What can you do?

  • Take threats seriously
  • Listen, you can say things like “I’m here for you, “tell me how your feeling”.
  • Stay calm
  • Ask, “are you having suicidal thoughts?” having a plan increases the risk
  • Be supportive
  • If possible do not leave the person alone, connect with professional help, family and or supports that the person identified
