Medical/First Aid

  • Call 911, relay exact location and type of emergency providing as many details as possible.
  • Stay with and comfort any person needing medical assistance if possible.
  • Be prepared to assist the appropriate emergency officials in clearing the scene, escorting
    EMS (Emergency Medical Service) or any other task necessary.
  • Be available so an officer can gather appropriate information for a report.
  • If work related injury the employee must contact Zane State College’s Office of Human Resources within 24 hours, and complete accident report form.

EARTHQUAKE

  • If INDOORS, seek refuge in a doorway or under a desk or table. Stay away from glass, windows, shelves, falling objects, overhead fixtures, and electrical equipment.
  • If OUTDOORS, move quickly to an open area away from buildings, structures, trees, utility poles and watch for falling objects. Always avoid power or utility lines as they may be energized.
  • After the initial shock, evaluate the situation and if emergency help is necessary, call 911 to report any injuries.
  • If there is any type of property damage, it should be reported to the Facilities Management Office.

CHEMICAL SPILL

  • Report spill/release of hazardous chemicals immediately to the Facilities Management Office (x1111 from campus phone or 740.683.3584) and 911 If there is a Medical Emergency.
  • Be prepared to provide information regarding: Exact location, type of hazardous material, estimated amount, reported injuries, actions you have taken, who had contact with the substance and any identifiable reactions.
  • The Facilities Management Office will contact the appropriate personnel to assist with the situation.
  • Labs are equipped with eyewash stations and showers if you need to flush someone’s eyes or place them in a shower to rinse off the chemical contaminants.
  • DO NOT MAKE CONTACT WITH THE HAZARDOUS MATERIAL OR ATTEMPT TO CLEAN-UP THE AREA.    
  • Any equipment or items containing hazardous material should be left in the affected area.
  • Account for everyone in the room and compile a list of individuals who have been contaminated.
  • Vacate the affected area at once and close the door to prevent further contamination.

 

FIRE

  • Upon discovering smoke, fire, or an explosion in a building, stay calm and activate the nearest fire alarm pull station.
  • Evacuate the building following the posted building evacuation routes. All persons should be at least 300 feet away from building.
  • Once in a safe area, call 911. Be prepared to provide information on the location, size, and cause of the fire as well as the extent of any injuries.
  • Notify the Facilities Management Office (x1111 from campus phone or 740.683.3584) with the same information so they can direct emergency personnel.
  • DO NOT USE ELEVATORS, as the electrical power may be cut off or fail.
  • If persons with disabilities cannot safely evacuate from building, assist them to the nearest stairwell. Alert emergency personnel of evacuee location.
  • If trapped in a room, retreat and close as many doors as possible between you and the fire. Place cloth or other material around/under the door to prevent smoke from coming in. Attempt to signal from the windows, but DO NOT BREAK THE GLASS unless absolutely necessary. If possible call 911 with your exact location.
  • If the fire is too large for you to extinguish with a fire extinguisher, do not remain in the area or attempt to fight the fire.
  • If a closed door is hot to the touch, DO NOT OPEN IT.
  • Once outside, gather at a safe location as determined by an officer or other emergency personnel. Follow the directions of emergency personnel and other appropriate officials.
  • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RE-ENTER THE BUILDING or leave campus until instructed to do so.

BOMB THREAT

  • Do not use cell phones, portable devices, or electronic equipment which may receive or transmit a signal triggering the explosive device.
  • Remain calm and immediately notify 911, then contact the Facilities Management Office (x1111 from campus phone or 740.683.3584).
  • If the threat is received by phone, try to keep the caller on the phone as long as possible. Write down the phone number using caller I.D and focus on gathering as much information as possible (location of device, time set to detonate, type of bomb, what the device looks like, background noise, caller characteristics such as gender, possible age, speech pattern, accent, excitement level, etc.)
  • If you encounter a suspicious object or unfamiliar item, DO NOT TOUCH OR MOVE THE ITEM. Report the location of the item to the Campus Safety Officer (740.624.5612) or the Facilities Management Office (x1111 from campus phone or 740.683.3584) immediately.
  • Move to a safe location within the building and follow the direction of officers and emergency response personnel. A determination will be made as to whether an evacuation is warranted based on the threat assessment.  DO NOT PULL THE FIRE ALARM AND AUTOMATICALLY EVACUATE THE BUILDING.
  • If an evacuation is necessary, follow instructions precisely. Do not use the elevator, turn off lights, or other electronic equipment.
  • Evacuate the building a minimum of 300 feet.  Keep streets and sidewalks clear for emergency personnel and safety vehicles.
  • Leave all bags and personal items in the room before evacuating.
  • Do not return to the building until advised by emergency response personnel.

 

FLOODING AND WATER DAMAGE

  • Call the Facilities Management Office (x1111 from campus phone or 740.683.3584) and report the exact location and severity of the leak.
  • Beware of possible electrocution hazard. If an electrical source is present, use caution and evacuate the area. Never attempt to unplug or remove an electrical appliance or wire from a flooded area.
  • Follow the directions of the appropriate personnel response to the situation.
  • Be prepared to assist as directed in protecting objects that are in jeopardy. Take essential steps to avoid or reduce immediate water damage such as covering objects with plastic sheeting or moving small or light objects out of danger.

Power Outage

  • Contact the Facilities Management Office (x1111 from campus phone or 740.683.3584) and notify them of the situation.
  • Campus Facilities & Safety will contact the necessary provider and assess the situation.
  • Keep students in the classroom and buildings until the situation is assessed.
  • If instructed to evacuate, proceed cautiously to the nearest clear exit.
  • Stairwells should be used to evacuate a building, DO NOT USE ELEVATORS.
  • Emergency lights in halls and stairwells will come on.

ACTIVE SHOOTER

  • Call 911, giving exact location and detailed physical description of shooter.
  • Call the Campus Safety Officer (740.624.5612) and provide the same information.
  • Call the Facilities Management Office (x1111 from campus phone or 740.683.3584) with the same information.  They will activate the necessary emergency alert notification systems.
  • Readily address your direct threat level to the shooter and immediately initiate a response. Do not panic or hesitate, trust your instincts.
  • If you cannot evacuate, take shelter in the nearest office, room, or closet.
  • Lock and barricade the door with anything available in the room (i.e., chairs, desks, cabinets). If possible tie down the door. Look for alternate escape routes. Do not open the door for anyone after the door is barricaded.
  • Be prepared to take the offensive if the shooter gains entry in your area. Gather possible weapons (i.e., books, chairs, pens, projection rods) and prepare yourself for the physical encounter. Position yourself in a location that will allow for the element of surprise.
  • If the shooter gains entry, throw items at the shooter’s head, and face for distraction and swarm the shooter as a group taking them down. Be prepared to do whatever necessary to take the shooter to the ground and maintain control of them until law enforcement arrives on scene. Do not pick up the gun and hold it. Put it in a trashcan and remove it from the room. Or turn the trashcan upside down, covering the weapon.
  • Do not attempt to drive away from the area. Law enforcement and emergency personnel cannot get into campus if the roadways are blocked.

EXPLOSION

  • Call 911 and describe the location and any other possible details regarding the explosion.
  • Notify the Campus safety Officer (740.624.5612) with the same information.
  • Notify the Facilities Management Office (x1111 from campus phone or 740.683.3584) with the same information so they activate the emergency alert notification system.
  • Be prepared for further explosions and take cover under tables, desks, or other objects which will provide protection against falling debris if necessary.
  • Stay away from windows, mirrors, overhead fixtures, filling cabinets, bookcases, and electrical equipment.
  • Follow the directions of emergency response personnel and appropriate officials.
  • If an evacuation is ordered, proceed to the nearest available exit.
  • If persons with disabilities cannot safely evacuate from building, assist them to the nearest stairwell away from damaged area. Alert emergency personnel of evacuee location.
  • Do not move seriously injured persons unless they are in obvious immediate danger (i.e., fire, building collapse).
  • Open doors carefully and watch for falling objects.
  • Do not use the elevator.
  • Do not use lighter or matches and avoid using phones.

TORNADO / SEVERE WEATHER

  • The Zanesville Emergency Management Agency will activate the county wide tornado warning siren will sound.
  • Move to the lowest level of the building and go to the nearest tornado shelter area as designated with signage in your building.
  • If outside, take shelter in the nearest building.
  • Stay away from windows, mirrors, glass, unsecured objects, and rooms with high ceilings (T430-T432).
  • Do not attempt to evacuate the building during an active tornado.
  • Follow the directions of emergency response personnel and other public safety officials.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • If persons with disabilities cannot safely take shelter, assist them to the nearest tornado shelter area. Alert emergency personnel of evacuee location.
  • Remain in the safe area until the “all clear” has been given.
  • After the storm has passed, contact 911 to report any injuries.
  • Contact the Facilities Management Office (x1111 from any campus telephone or call 740.683.3584) to report property damage.
